I have been SHOUTING about this on Twitter, but I wanted to CODIFY this into a COMPREHENSIVE BLOG POST which I invite … no, BEG you to share.
So, March 1st is World Book Day. In England, World Book Day is celebrated by the giving out of £1 book tokens to students and many other wonderful book-related events! There are a few official World Book Day titles that are made in special £1 editions, so kids can buy their own book.
This year, the World Book Day committee selected a collection of wonderful books, but all for younger readers. The lovely people of Waterstone’s thought it would be nice if there was something on offer for older readers. So they selected two YA books. Working along with HarperCollins UK, they arranged to have £1 versions of these books made.
One of the two books, I am THRILLED to say, is The Name of the Star. Starting on MONDAY, 27 FEBRUARY, The Name of the Star will be available for ONE POUND at Waterstone’s.
SOME QUESTIONS I HAVE GOTTEN
Wait, £1? For a book? Is this a trick?
THIS IS NOT A TRICK.
Is it the entire book or just a section?
IT IS THE ENTIRE BOOK.
Do I have to be a kid/an adult/a reptile creature/a member of the royal class to take advantage of this?
No! ANYONE can purchase the £1 edition.
Do I need a book token to pay for this?
NO. £1 is all that is required.
Can I pay with a book token?
Actually, yes! You can! This cannot be advertised on the posters for legal reasons, but you CAN in fact pay with a book token, making your copy FREE.
So I can pay with EITHER £1 or a book token, is that what you are saying?
That is precisely what I am saying!
Will this be in ALL Waterstone’s?
This is a widespread offer throughout all Waterstone’s in England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. (Not Waterstone’s in The Netherlands, I am sorry to say.) The £1 copies *should* be in stock in your local store, but each store orders their own books, so I can’t guarantee that there isn’t a rogue store out there that didn’t order some. But it is VERY LIKELY you will be able to get this offer in your local store.
WHAT IF MY STORE IS THAT CRAZY STORE?
Ask them to order it for you!
Can I buy this £1 Name of the Star online?
You must go into the shop, or send one of your servants/friends/highly trained animals in FOR you.
Can I buy more than one copy?
You can buy as many copies as your heart desires.
So I can buy a whole bunch of them, take off the £1 stickers, and give them as gifts? I could get, say FIVE GIFTS for FIVE POUNDS?
Now you’re talking! YEAH you can!
HOW LONG WILL THIS INSANITY LAST?
There are 10,000 £1 copies. This lasts while they last. So the sooner you get one, THE BETTER.
…………… THE MADNESS UNDERNEATH.
HEY YOU GUYS!
So it turns out that MANY of you are coming and we could not FIT into the King’s Road Waterstones. So we got a ROOM just down the street, really close by. The event is now at:
The Beaufort House private function room
354 Kings Road
London SW3 5UZ
Again, this is about 5 minutes from the store. And if you go to the store all confused, they will guide you gently to the room. The Beaufort House is a restaurant downstairs, but on the side is a SWANK BLACK DOOR that says PRIVATE CLUB. That’s the door! Go in there!
Again, the event is on SATURDAY at 11am. There will be CAKES and PRESENTS. And SPECIAL GUESTS mingling around! YOU REALLY MUST COME. IT IS GOING TO BE AWESOME. And now we will all fit! And there are sofas and nice chairs and it will be much more comfy and YAY! *muppet arms*
If you can RSVP, that’s great. But you don’t HAVE to. You can just come if you want. But RSVPing gives us some sense of how many people to get CAKE for. And don’t stress about the RSVP. The email goes to Rosi at HarperCollins and she is VERY NICE. Just say that you are coming and how many people might be with you. But again, it’s okay to just SHOW UP.
But you really must come with 100 of your best friends.
So, there has been some KOOKYPANTS adventures with the scheduling of the UK appearances … . it’s a long story that involves me, Prince Phillip, the Royal Mail, Jeremy Clarkson, seven spider monkeys, and His Royal Laminated Highness The King of Argos … but we have it all worked out now, and here is what I KNOW.
The main UK EVENT will be held at the King’s Road Waterstones in Chelsea on Saturday, 22 October, at 11am.
Anyone can come! EVERYONE MUST COME! It is 100% free, but they ask, if you CAN, to drop them an email and say if you are coming. IT IS OKAY IF YOU DO NOT SEND THIS EMAIL. You can come with as MANY PEOPLE AS YOU LIKE if you do not. They are asking this so they can TRY to get a headcount. And I will be getting CAKES, so I’m trying to get a rough estimate of how many CAKES to get.
There will also be PRIZES. I am bringing 50 MAGNET SETS and AS MANY T-SHIRTS AS I CAN GET IN MY SUITCASE. Plus, I think some COOL AND AWESOME people will be coming, so YOU HAVE TO COME. No, seriously. You have to come or they WILL NEVER LET ME COME BACK. I am counting on you.
There WAS a Manchester event on the books, but it exploded. The event, I mean. Not Manchester. Manchester is fine. I don’t know what went wrong. I don’t set up these events—I just get notes telling me what is going on. I will still be GOING to Manchester to visit some schools (including, according to my schedule, the Manchester School for Girls and the Turton High School Media Arts College). And at some point, we will GO INTO Waterstones so I can sign stock. I will try to tell people when I will be there that day (sometime after 1:30pm) and maybe you can RUN OVER and will will PARTY DOWN.
But the BIG THING is the London event, which is going to be a PARTY. So please come. Make friends. HANG OUT. Poke people with sticks! Wait … okay. Yes. Poke people with sticks! I AM COUNTING ON YOU AND BRINGING CAKE.
NOTE: the FIRST 50 PEOPLE to RSVP get MAGNET SETS. You MUST collect in person, though! If you don’t show, your magnets go to the next person in line!
